Suggested Structure
This is a suggested process for warmups. Not all stages are appropriate for all questions/tasks that might come up. Warms up's should take about 15min and not longer than 20min.
1) Think in own head about the problem.
Independently think about problem. Remind them of imaging or mental strategies you might have taught. Mental number line. Grouping fractions on the ground/table in front of them.
2) Discuss collaboratively
Student move to groups to discuss their ideas. Still all verbal. Referring to what ever is on the TV only at this stage.
3) Involve Materials or Handout
Still in groups, give material/scaffold/materials so that kids then discuss with reference to this. No pens at this stage.
4) Record / Written Strategy
Students are provided a pen and are able to write/draw to support/confirm their ideas.
5) Sharing
Wisely choose a group/idea/bit of work with deftly highlight a key bit of learning that you would like to focus on. Discussion focus around this.
6) Reflection
Kids think back to how they solved the problem and are invited to share what they got wrong or need to change for next time.
