Spinners
Teachers role in this lesson is to link to fractions as much as possible.
What the first spinner and then pause on each the the subsequent ones to talk about what outcomes might be expected, likely, not likely, guaranteed, least likely, impossible etc - weave in fractions where they are there. 1/2 change etc.
The story of Sam
Sam made these two spinners - which ones should he use if he wants to avoid his homework?
Class discussion
Make your own spinners with buddy with Sam's choices and try them out. Record your outcome on a table. Which one would you choose?

After kids have completed the practical part come back together to discuss which they could choose.
For teacher (trying to link their language to fractions language): equivalent fractions, 1/3 = 2/6 - link the bottom number to the picture, link the top number to the picture. Chopping thirds in half to get 6ths. How I linked them (pictures at the bottom) I screenshoted from this page and imported into EE. How much chance does it have? A 1/3 chance or a 1in3 chance. 2 in 6 the same as 1 in 3? etc
How we linked fractions to the spinners
This stared with one child asserting there were three quarters in the first one and six quarters in the second one.
