This was quite hard and ended up with the kids not really focusing on what I wanted them to focus on (the added up lots of different small numbers badly). They did not get time to get onto the fraction part of the question....

Building on yesterday. Slightly more difficult question - the shape is less regular.
Question: How many blocks to build my patio? If I painted EXACTLY 1/2 (half) red and 1/4 (one quarter) of the patio another colour - what would it look it? (Link back to fractions from last unit)

Sequence of student work presented
This was the first one we discussed as a class. I chose it because they had chosen nice big chunks of it to work out. Which was a great strategy. It was the only one we look at this day. We spent a little time using PV strat to add up the various parts as a class.
This shows how hard that kids found this more irregular shape.
This was something I gave to the top kids as voluntary homework. I challneged them to work out how I had determined the number of blocks.
