How do you feel about maths?
This is a very short video where Bolar introduces herself and asks the kids how they feel about maths. I got the kids to work in groups and record the range on opinions to some questions. Below is the template that I used. I them collated the themes to see where the class was sitting.

Myths about math (skip to 50 sec in)
I used this as an a opportunity to talk about student misconceptions (what they think they know from my survey) and a chance to practice:
the repeating talk move
student directed conversation
The repeating talk move should be familiar from last year. With each good idea repeated 5 or so time. This helps build up the expectation that they have to listen to their peers not just sit there switched off.
Student directed conversation is an idea I have had, though I am sure it is not original where students will run their own classroom conversations. Esentially after a student has contributed their idea THEY select the next speaker rather than the teacher. So far I have build in agreeing and disagree. On the to do list are: saying why, getting the kids to start using talk moves themselves.

Brain Flexibility
Another one where it is worth stopping a lot during the video and asking children to think about what they have just heard. Heaps of ideas and they come pretty quick.

Errors
Talks about the importance of struggle and hard thinking - not getting it right at the end.
