Building 15's, with materials Splitting into 100 and 35 and "finding 15's in them" 15+15+15 etc (repeated addition) 135 - 15 - 15 (repated subtraction) starting with (10x15) - (1x15) starting with 5x 15 |
What have your drawn? What materials woud be good?
What numbers are we good at adding together easily (join the 5's) How are you keeping track of your packets? Leave them. What maths facts can you find in your pattern? At end - how would knowing 15x10 = 150 have helped? What maths facts can you find in your pattern? At end - how would knowing 15x10 = 150 have helped? Unlikely entire group understands - get them to prove/unpack at lower level... Unlikely entire group understands - get them to prove/unpack at lower level...link to 10x? |

Make students aware of stages, encourage them to evaluate their own work against them.
Questioning shoud push them 4>5>6

Studnet work
Did not finish, saw that 2x15=30 and attempted to use this, addition fail.....NS: label each part of number line and spot error.
Attempted halving and halving again. NS: expose to more efficient ideas.
OMG OMG OMG Amazing progession of ideas....stage 4, to 5, and onto 6. A beautiful piece of math. This was the one we discussed the most as a class.
Only one kid in the group actually understood, and he only came up with the ideas in last 2 min. They had been building piles of 15's before that with materials but mucked around....
